This Year 2 teaching resource consists of 34 PowerPoint slides, split into 2 sessions, covering spelling rules for adding -ed and -ing suffixes:

Session 1

  • Do Nothing rule (jump - jumped/jumping)
  • Double the Consonant rule ( tap - tapped/tapping)

Session 2

  • Drop Y rule (fry - fried/frying)
  • Drop E rule ( bake - baked/baking)

Each session includes:

  • Explanation of each rule with example
  • Example of rule in practice with root words (animated slides)
  • Carpet activity: children to apply the correct rule to complete the sentences (animated slides). Pupils can express their ideas on paper or whiteboards.
  • Link to Violet’s Vowel Suffixes interactive on game for pupils to apply taught rules.
