
This Year 2 teaching resource consists of 79 PowerPoint slides, split into 4 sessions, covering spelling rules for making plural nouns:
- Adding -s or the general rule (dog - dogs)
- Adding -es for words ending in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x or -z
- Dropping y for -ies if preceded by a consonant (baby - babies), but add -s if preceded by a vowel (boy - boys)
- Dropping f for -ves (leaf -leaves)
First three sessions include:
- Recapping of ‘nouns’ with a You Tube video link (Noun Song)
- Introducing concept of ‘plural’ nouns
- Outlining four main rules for creating plural nouns
- Explanation of each rule with example
- Example of rule in practice with root words (animated slides)
- Carpet activity: children to apply the correct rule to complete the sentences (animated slides). Pupils can express their ideas on paper or whiteboards.
- Link to ‘Plural Pirates’ interactive game for pupils to apply taught rules.
Final session gives pupils the opportunity to recap all four spelling rules using the carpet activity and Plural Pirates game.
