A resource for students to discover patterns for calculating 6x6, 7x7, 8x8 and 9x9. It doesn’t matter how a student sees a number for example “6” as 4+2, 3+3, 5+1 or 10-4, the size of the unit does not change the calculation. A framework is provided to aid the calculation, eg 4 is double double or 5 is half of ten, using a box or there is space for a number line to find the total.
I have also created WOID, Which one is different, (previously WODB), to open up discussions! For example look at nines: the difference in (10-1) x 9 or 9 x (10 -1).
For halving odd decade numbers it is often easier for students to find friendlier numbers:
70 = 60 + 10
70/2 = 60/2 + 10/2 (half of 70 = half of 60 + half of 10) unable to format with an underline
= 30 + 5
half of 70 is 35
