Storms, Islands and Us

Year 8 – Storms, Islands and Us – A brief study of historic importance that reflects our relationship with nature, ownership and the problems that can arise with one of the key areas of study: William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest.’
’The textual studies all tie in with the theme: reasons for colonisation and the problems that arose to highlight that the key character of ‘Caliban’ is viewed often as a ‘savage.’ Through exploratory discussion we can challenge and critically evaluate our viewpoints and attitudes towards culture and race.
As the title suggests the unit will explore perceptions (how we think) of nature and culture. It will help us to dissect and interrogate the writer’s craft (how the writing is created). It will contain many opportunities to examine both language, structure and form in texts that will be sequenced to provide meaningful analytical writing opportunities and comparative discussions. Extracts provided will also provide stimulus for creative pieces.
