Structure Analysis Openings Worksheet KS3 GCSE English Language 11
Teach structure and evaluation with this KS3 and GCSE English Language bundle of six worksheets on focus, supported judgements and fiction reading. Develop explanations of how a story unfolds and how far a statement fits the evidence. Students explore opening choices, changes of focus, the timing of details and reveals, then build supported judgements with distinct reasons.
Writer tasks make these problems practical. Students try different openings, direct attention, delay information and create details that support a judgement before reading examples by another writer. The reading tasks progress from short scenes to longer stories, with discussion and space to develop responses.
Includes 6 multi-page student worksheets:
• 11 What does the writer show us first
• 12 Following the focus
• 13 Why put this detail here
• 14 Do you agree
• 15 Developing your judgement
• 20a Putting the skills together – one story
.
Worksheet 20a provides cumulative practice through a puppet-theatre writing task and an aquarium story. It revisits retrieval, inference and language analysis alongside structure and evaluation, so earlier reading knowledge is useful for this final worksheet.
Part of English Language Foundations by Kate Coldrick. Suitable for KS3 teaching and KS4 GCSE English Language intervention, including tuition, small groups and home education. Clear instructions and an uncluttered layout can be helpful for autistic and other neurodivergent students who benefit from explicit, manageable tasks.
Also available in other bundles: All six worksheets are also included in English Language Foundations Volume 2. They are different from those in the Comparing Texts and Writers’ Viewpoints bundle.
