Subitising Cards 1–10: EYFS Reception

Quick-look number cards that help children see how many without counting. There are six cards for every number from 1 to 10: the numeral and word, a dice, a ten frame, a line of dots, a domino and a scattered or two-group pattern.

Cards 1 to 5 build fast, at-a-glance recognition of small numbers. Cards 6 to 10 show each number in two parts, such as ‘five and two make seven’, so children start to see how numbers are made. Ten frames always fill the top row first, and the same number looks different on every card, which keeps children talking about what they see.

Quick look: show a card for two seconds, then ask ‘How many? How did you see it?’ Pairs: find two cards that show the same number
Snap: same number, even if the pictures look different
Make the number: copy a card with counters on the mat

Supports the Number Early Learning Goal from the DfE’s EYFS statutory framework (effective 1 September 2026), including ‘Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5.’ The 6 to 10 cards support ‘Have a deep understanding of numbers to 10, including the composition of each number.’ Not endorsed by the DfE.
