This reading challenge could be undertaken by children of any age. I have been teaching in Key Stage 2 for 22 years. I give out this homework on the day before the holidays when I meet my new class for September.
The children choose 10 different reading activities to achieve over the holidays, they can even make up their own. When they have achieved each task, they cut out the relevant scoop of ice cream and stick it on a cone. 2 scoops on each cone. They can decorate the ice creams with sprinkles, cherries or flakes.
I have been using reading challenges in my class for the past four years, with great success. They give a real purpose for reading. We have a school reward and a treat - obviously ice cream or ice lollies work well.
We also have a Winter and a Spring Reading Challenge for these longer holidays.
