Taking Responsibility – Primary PSHE Lesson
Help young learners understand what it means to take responsibility for themselves, their choices, and their classroom community.

This engaging Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lesson uses discussion, role-play, and hands-on activities to build independence, teamwork, and pride in helping.

** Lesson Overview**
Starter Activity: “I Can…” Circle Time – Children share one responsibility they have at home (e.g., feeding a pet, tidying toys, helping set the table).
Main Activities:
Assign simple classroom jobs and explain why each one matters.
Create a Responsibility Chart to track who is helping with which tasks.
Complete the Helping Hands Activity — each child adds a handprint with one way they can help.
Solve problem-solving scenarios about taking responsibility in everyday situations.
Build a class Charter of Responsibilities to hang on the wall.
Classroom Culture: Keep responsibilities age-appropriate and achievable. Use positive reinforcement for effort, and balance responsibility with fun and enjoyment.

Assessment:
Teacher observation of students fulfilling classroom responsibilities.
Self-assessment of home responsibilities (“One way I help at home is…”).
Teacher notes on understanding of personal and shared responsibility.
