## TES Maths Podcast - Introducing algebra

In this episode, we talk everything from A-level resources to tracking pupils’ progress, with bucket loads of rich tasks thrown in for good measure. More importantly, we discuss how best to use these rich tasks in the classroom, with pupils of all ages and abilities. Our general theme is the best ways to introduce algebra to students, and what to avoid. Alison Kiddle, from NRICH, was a fantastic guest as left me with lots of problems to keep my brain ticking over. #### TES Maths Podcast - Differentiation

This time we welcomed teacher, blogger, tweeter and best-selling author Will Emeny to the show. In order to take full advantage of having a full time teacher in our presence, I changed the format around a little for the episode. So, you will find not one but two Show and Tell topics. The first is about effective ways of differentiating in the maths classroom, and the second is ways of teaching maths in context, to hook the students in. Links to all the ideas and resources discussed can be found below. Subscribe on iTunes by visiting www.tes.co.uk/mathspodcast

#### TES Maths Podcast - Fractions

I thoroughly enjoyed recording this podcast. My guest was Celia Hoyles, the outgoing Director of the NCETM -The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics, and she proved to be a fascinating guest. We talked about topics including Numeracy Across the Curriculum, the midfield of misconceptions that is Fractions, and the use of technology in maths lessons. #### TES Maths Podcast - Negative numbers

Our new TES Maths Podcast is now in the can, and what a very enjoyable podcast to record it was. I was very lucky to be joined by Jeremy and Dietmar from King’s College London, to talk about their very exciting ICCAMS project. But I would never let them get away with just that, so as well we managed to fit in a chat about falling standards in maths, advice on running discussion based lessons, and some festive maths ideas as well!
In the Word document you will find links to all the resources, ideas and activities discussed, and a link to the Forum discussion as well.

#### Adding Fractions - ROTW 15 (2011/12)

This resource was selected to be TES Resource of the Week. Set your students the challenge of filling in the blank squares by adding up the four surrounding fractions. Once they have mastered this, can they extend the problem by creating a challenge for their fellow students? Which denominators make like the most difficult? Which make it easiest? How about we add in some mixed numbers? What about some extra operations? This resource has a lot of potential.

#### Algebra Problem Solving - ROTW 1 (2011/12)

This resource was selected to be Maths Resource of the Week. A truly phenomenal set of 10 algebra problems designed for Foundation level at GCSE. Different levels of support are offered for each problem, and the document itself is beautifully designed and laid out. I would pay big money for this – but here it is, on TES, and completely free!

#### Interactive Division by Chunking - ROTW 2 (2011/12

This resource was selected to be Maths Resource of the Week. A really slick interactive Excel spreadsheet that clearly demonstrates how the process of 'chunking' can be used to solve long division problems. With complete flexibility to change the number and the divisor, and a succient set of instructions, this should prove to be a really handy resource. The author has kindly uploaded more of his wonderful Interactive Excel resources, and they can be found on TES.

#### Volume and Surface Area - ROTW 8 (2011/12)

This resource was selected to be TES Resource of the Week. It is an entire lesson on Volume and Surface Area, and what a lesson it is! There is a challenging starter, group work, built-in PLTS, opportunities for peer assessment, and an emphasis on the quality of written communication, all of which make for a rich, rewarding experience. I will certainly be using lots of this lesson the next time I tackle volume and surface area.
