Teacher Description – The Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most important historical artworks from the Middle Ages. Created around 1070–1080, it is an embroidered linen cloth approximately 70 metres (230 feet) long that tells the story of the events leading to the Norman Conquest of England and the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Although it is called a tapestry, it is actually an embroidery because the pictures are stitched onto the fabric rather than woven into it.

The embroidery begins with King Edward the Confessor and follows the journey of Harold Godwinson to Normandy, his meeting with William, Duke of Normandy, and the events that followed Edward’s death. It also shows Halley’s Comet, William’s preparations for invasion, the crossing of the English Channel, the Battle of Hastings and William’s victory. The scenes are accompanied by short captions written in Latin.

Historians value the Bayeux Tapestry because it provides a remarkable visual record of life in the 11th century. It shows Norman and Anglo-Saxon clothing, armour, weapons, ships, buildings, horses and everyday activities. While it presents the events from a Norman perspective and should be compared with other historical evidence, it remains one of the most important sources for studying the Norman Conquest.

Today, the Bayeux Tapestry is preserved in Bayeux, Normandy, France, where it continues to help people learn about medieval history, art and storytelling.
