The 66 cross numbers (crosswords with numbers as answers) in this book are mostly arranged in order of difficulty. The cross numbers can be used in a number of different ways, which would allow pupils to practise or develop different skills. They require logical thinking as clues are interlinked. You need to decide where to start. Free to photocopy but please acknowledge.

All answers now included in this version of the book.

The early cross numbers can provide practice of basic addition, subtraction and multiplication, though they can also be used to provide calculator work. Some of the more difficult cross numbers require the use of a calculator or spreadsheet.

In all cases, most of the answers are cross referenced to other answers in the cross number. Where this is not the case the answers come from one of several categories:

  • time conversions
  • metric conversions
  • miscellaneous conversions

You will need to ensure that pupils know about these conversions (especially the meaning of gross, score and decade). Later on pupils will need to know about primes, squares and cubes. Finally, comes the introduction of factors and multiples.
