This engaging and comprehensive reading lesson develops children’s understanding of Chapter 7, The Contest, of Philip Pullman’s The Firework-Maker’s Daughter, whilst building their vocabulary, comprehension and summarising skills.
Through an illustrated slideshow and accompanying storyboard template, children explore the dramatic competition, infer characters’ feelings and reflect on Lila’s achievements. Two connected main tasks teach children to select essential information, summarise events briefly in their own words and sequence the chapter’s key moments through pictures and captions.
The lesson includes:
-Vocabulary activities to clarify unfamiliar language;
-Two sets of retrieval questions with answers;
-Discussion and inference tasks exploring the audience’s reaction, the Three Gifts and Lila’s recognition as a firework-maker;
-Step-by-step summarising activities covering important details, logical order and concise explanations;
-A model summary, independent writing prompts and opportunities for partner review;
-A six-panel storyboard worksheet with slideshow guidance for selecting events and writing captions;
-A final learning review with self-assessment and an exit question.
Answers, suggested responses and teaching ideas are provided in the slideshow notes.
Ideal for whole-class or guided reading in Years 3 and 4, with opportunities for paired discussion, independent writing and visual storytelling. Children will need access to Chapter 7 of the novel.
