This engaging and comprehensive post-reading lesson brings together children’s understanding of Philip Pullman’s The Firework-Maker’s Daughter, whilst developing their comprehension, analytical writing and storytelling skills.
Through an illustrated slideshow and accompanying writing scaffold, children recall events from across the novel, explore its main themes and explain a key message using a point, evidence, explain paragraph. They then draw on their knowledge of the ending and characters to plan and begin an imaginative next chapter.
The lesson includes:
-Three sets of whole-book retrieval questions with answers;
-A clear explanation of themes and messages, with examples from the novel;
-Discussion tasks exploring friendship, determination, trust and opportunity;
-Step-by-step guidance for selecting relevant evidence and explaining its significance;
-A structured PEE worksheet, model paragraph and sentence starters;
-Planning prompts and a model opening for a plausible continuation of the story;
-Partner review activities and a final learning review with self-assessment.
Answers, suggested responses and teaching ideas are provided in the slideshow notes and on the second page of the worksheet.
Ideal for whole-class or guided reading in Years 3 and 4, with opportunities for paired discussion, independent explanation and creative writing. Children should have completed reading the novel and will need access to the text.
