This engaging whole-class reading session develops children’s understanding of the five oceans, while strengthening their fluency and comprehension when reading non-fiction texts.
The resource includes an original, illustrated two-page reading text and an accompanying 12-slide PowerPoint, providing a varied sequence of activities.
The text introduces the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic Oceans, explaining where they are and how they connect to form one world ocean. Children discover the largest and smallest oceans, compare icy waters with warm coral reefs, and explore how people use the sea. They also learn how currents move water and why caring for the ocean matters, including how litter dropped far from the coast can reach the sea.
A vocabulary check clarifies unfamiliar language, followed by activities developing retrieval, explanation, inference, comparison, sequencing and summarising skills. Quick-check questions, solo thinking, partner discussions and deeper-thinking challenges encourage children to use clues from the text and explain their answers. Sentence starters support children in sharing their ideas.
Suggested answers, support prompts and teacher guidance are provided in the slide notes. Both the Word reading text and PowerPoint presentation are fully editable.
Best suited to Year 2, the session can also be adapted for other KS1 learners. Ideal for linking purposeful reading comprehension with a geography unit exploring our wonderful world.
