1-Hour Lesson – Fully Interactive – Ready to Teach
Dear Colleague,
Imagine leaving everything behind to settle on the open plains, facing harsh weather, isolation, and endless work just to survive. This lesson explores the lives of homesteaders in the American West and the challenges they overcame to carve out a new life.
This lesson is the ninth in a unit on the American West. Students will consolidate knowledge on homesteading, examine the strategies settlers used to survive, and evaluate the outcomes of their efforts, applying their learning to exam-style questions.
All lessons in this series follow a consistent structure, supporting coherent learning and helping students track their progress:
LO 1: To understand the difficulties of homesteading in the US in the 1800s
LO 2: To explain the solutions adopted by homesteaders
LO 3: To evaluate the outcomes of homesteading
Learning Features:
Fully assessed tasks with opportunities for feedback
Extension task included for higher-achieving students
Resources provided at the end of the PowerPoint
I have also created Lesson 10 on the condition of women in homesteading, as well as sets on Plains Indians, Settlers and Development of the Plains, Law and Order, Law and Crime, and the full unit (24 lessons, 100 hours of planning).
