A one lesson resource for simply creating a piece of poetry. Using the idea of describing something by what it isn’t, learners can build up a collection of ideas which will convert into lines that they can edit and refine into a poem. The technique, once learned can be used to create other poems. Learners are given a simple concept such as a book or a car to describe in terms of what it isn’t. More complex work can be achieved by using broader concepts such as learning to drive or planting a tree, or something that uses characters with occupations and locations, for example the Watchmaker.
working this way responds to a common habit people have of answering in the negative.
Q What would you like to eat?
A I don’t want pizza again and I don’t want a baked potato. We do this a lot!
The lesson is suitable for all as learners can choose how complex they want their idea to be and can build the work with a series of ideas that resonate with them.
