1-Hour Lesson – Fully Interactive – Ready to Teach

Dear Colleague,

Imagine the American West in turmoil — ranchers and farmers clashing over land, water, and resources. The answer came with guns, alliances, and lawless skirmishes: the Johnson County War in Wyoming.

This lesson is the thirteenth in a unit on the American West. It explores the causes, events, and significance of the conflict. Students will consolidate their knowledge of ranching and apply it to exam-style questions through interactive tasks.

All lessons in this series follow a consistent structure, supporting coherent learning and helping students track their progress:

LO 1:To understand the causes of the invasion of Johnson County.
LO 2: To explain the events of the attack.
LO3: To evaluate the significance of this conflict for the US government.

Learning Features:
Fully assessed tasks with opportunities for feedback
Extension activity for higher-achieving students
Resources provided at the end of the PowerPoint

This is a straightforward, knowledge-rich lesson that can run for 1 hour.

I have also created Lesson 14 on Law and Order, and full units covering Plains Indians, Settlers, Development of the Plains, Law and Order, and Law and Crime (24 lessons, 100 hours of planning).
