The Secret Garden | Upper KS2 English Reading Lesson

Explore the mystery of The Secret Garden with this ready-to-teach Upper KS2 English reading lesson, built around an accessible extract from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel. Pupils develop key reading skills through vocabulary, retrieval, inference, prediction, word choice and evidence-based responses, before applying their understanding in a focused writing task.

The lesson moves from an engaging locked-garden hook and essential story context into explicit vocabulary teaching, close reading and progressively more demanding comprehension. Questions include find-and-copy retrieval, vocabulary in context, inference and 2- and 3-mark responses, helping pupils understand both what an answer requires and how evidence supports it. A VIPERS extension provides further practice across the reading skills.

The PowerPoint is the main teaching resource, with a clear pupil-facing sequence designed for whole-class teaching. Activities include partner talk, prediction, vocabulary checks, reading practice, discussion, independent writing, a WAGOLL and self-assessment. The lesson also makes explicit links to KS2 Reading content domains, including 2a vocabulary, 2b retrieval, 2c summary, 2d inference, 2e prediction and 2f/2g language and meaning.

Also included is a printable A4 black-and-white “At a Glance” sheet – the supporting act to the PowerPoint – bringing together key vocabulary, setting, story sequence, themes, reading skills and discussion prompts in an engaging format pupils can learn from and colour in.

Ideal for: Upper KS2 English • Reading comprehension • Whole-class reading • Classic fiction • VIPERS • SATs reading preparation • Guided reading • Independent follow-up

NB. This lesson was designed and written by a teacher. The draft PowerPoint was made by Claude AI, the graphically enhanced version was then made by ChatGPT, and all editing was done by Copilot. Every stage was overseen, amended where necessary, and approved by a teacher. Total time approximately 4 hours.
