This information sheet includes context to Dickens’ short story and a task. It could form a one-off lesson alongside a reading of the text, a homework or cover sheet. It would also be useful as part of a ghost story scheme of work. The second sheet asks students to look at Dickens’ description in a paragraph.

Excellent for higher level students - my materials are aimed at those who might struggle with the original text. See here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/the-signalman-by-charles-dickens-12798160 For reluctant readers I have tried to establish the basic story line through a presentation with audio and the old BBC TV version - available for free here: https://www.eslreading.org/the_signalman.html. There are also links to resources for other classic ghost stories including 'Whistle and I'll Come' and a short audio on the Staplehurst disaster. Interesting how the The Signalman is a prototype psychological ghost story with far less clanking of chains that in the earlier A Christmas Carol.
