Strengthen students’ confidence and performance in AQA English Language Paper 1 with this fully resourced scheme of work built around two engaging fiction extracts: The Silk Factory and The Sound of Thunder. Please note: the extracts themselves are not included due to copyright restrictions, but page references and clear lesson guidance are provided so teachers can easily source the texts.

This scheme walks students step-by-step through Section A of Paper 1, explicitly teaching and modelling how to approach Questions 1–4. Using The Silk Factory, students develop secure understanding of AO1 retrieval, AO2 language analysis and AO2 structural analysis before moving into evaluative writing for Question 4. Lessons break down each question with scaffolded examples, model paragraphs and clear use of the PEMAL structure (Point, Evidence, Method, Analysis, Link), helping students move from basic responses to developed, exam-ready answers.

Language analysis is carefully taught through close exploration of imagery, personification and simile, with students practising how to zoom in on key words and explain precise effects. Structural analysis lessons focus on shifts in focus, narrative perspective, changes in setting and tension-building, ensuring students understand how to discuss “the whole source” rather than drifting back into language commentary. Evaluation lessons explicitly model how to agree or disagree with a statement while embedding relevant references and exploring both language and structure.

The scheme then applies these skills to The Sound of Thunder, giving students the opportunity to practise structural analysis and high-level evaluation in a dramatic and engaging extract. The Tyrannosaurus Rex encounter provides rich material for exploring tension, character reaction and writer’s methods, supporting students in crafting balanced, evidence-led responses for Question 4.

Throughout the scheme, there is a clear focus on exam timing, mark allocation awareness and understanding assessment objectives. Students are repeatedly shown how to move beyond feature spotting towards analysing effects and intentions, while weaker responses are contrasted with stronger model answers to clarify expectations.

Ideal for Year 11 revision, mock preparation or structured Paper 1 teaching earlier in the course, this scheme provides clarity, rigour and repetition of key exam skills. Fully editable and ready to teach, it is designed to build analytical confidence and raise attainment across the full range of abilities.
