The Star-Spangled Banner Poster

Teacher Description

The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics were written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 after he witnessed the successful defence of Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore. Inspired by the sight of the American flag still flying after a night of heavy bombardment, Key wrote the poem “Defence of Fort M’Henry,” which was later set to music. In 1931, The Star-Spangled Banner was officially adopted as the national anthem of the United States.

This colouring poster helps pupils explore the history behind one of America’s most famous patriotic songs while encouraging discussion about national symbols, the War of 1812, and the importance of the American flag. It provides an engaging cross-curricular activity linking history, music, citizenship, and literacy.
