This extract gives weaker students a simplified and broken down way of accessing a fiction text. The text is about a group of boys aimlessly messing about in a river when one of them is badly bitten by a pike. The first part poses comprehension and language activities to ensure the text is carefully read. The second part gives questions which follow the style of Language Paper 1 for AQA - analysing language, writing about structure and evaluating a section of the extract. The tasks can be made more challenging for an able group at KS3, or adapted for use as a GCSE style extract.

There is also a writing activity which involves a shift of perspective - GCSE original writing style task.
