Shared Values: The World Around Us (Lesson 7)

Up to date | Fully resourced | Ideal for Year 7

This lesson explores the UK’s role within the international community and helps students understand how global events and news stories affect people. It teaches students how to manage negative news, recognise positive global contributions, and understand how the UK helps other countries and receives help in return. It also links to Shared Values by encouraging empathy, perspective and community awareness.

What is included

Understanding the UK’s global role
Clear explanations of how the UK supports international development, humanitarian aid and global cooperation, as well as how other countries support the UK.

International charities overview
Examples of well known UK charities working around the world, helping students understand global responsibility and community links.

Introduction to the news and media
A simple explanation of different types of news stories and why negative news often receives more attention. This supports students’ emotional awareness around worrying headlines.

How to cope with negative news
Practical strategies for balancing overwhelming or worrying news with more positive content, encouraging students to develop healthy media habits.

I would recommend ordering some copies of a “Happy Newspaper” as an example of positive journalism. If physical copies are not available, teachers can explain the idea or share a positive news story as a model.

Return to the self assessment sheet
For classes who have not yet completed the end‑of‑unit reflection, this lesson revisits the self assessment sheet to help students recognise progress and consolidate their learning across the unit.
Everything is fully editable and ready to teach.
