This activity is designed to teach students about the lasting impact of online communication and the importance of kindness when messaging others. Using a fictional WhatsApp conversation between teachers, students analyse the dialogue and use a colour-coded system to identify positive and negative remarks about individuals in the chat.

Students then record their observations on a visual “marking” sheet, with each negative comment leaving a lasting “scar” that represents how unkind words online can take years to heal, even if the conversation seems harmless at the time.

This resource includes:

A printable WhatsApp-style conversation

A colour-coded marking sheet for students to annotate

A discussion prompt for exploring the consequences of online negativity

Learning objective: To understand how unkind online comments can leave lasting damage, and to promote empathy and positive digital communication.

Ideal for PSHE, digital literacy, or anti-bullying sessions, especially in KS2 or lower KS3, including SEN groups.
