**A Treasure Hunt Sensory Story **

This resource is a fantastic multi-sensory resource designed to be used by practitioners, parents, teachers or classroom assistants with young children or adults with learning difficulties, autism spectrum conditions and PMLD.

Included in this resource pack is the following:

  • a detailed lesson plan
  • suggested targets for students to work towards during the session
  • a visual SMART Notebook presentation to follow the lesson plan, including links to music from YouTube for specific parts of the story
  • an asessment record sheet for practitioners to record observations/progress in communication skills of students

Learning Objectives are:

  1. Demonstrate ability to follow instructions by listening and responding to staff and participating in session activities.
  2. Demonstrate ability to cooperate in a given activity by purposefully withholding their attention from or committing their attention to an activity/experience.
  3. Demonstrate ability to make spoken/signed contributions to session activities by offering ideas/suggestions during group discussions.
  4. Demonstrate levels of engagement/enjoyment in set activities by participating in set activities.
  5. Demonstrate ability to take turns in group activity by contributing ideas to activities and allowing others in group to contribute their ideas.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate / inappropriate levels of behaviour whilst completing session activities.
  7. Demonstrating willingness/ability to participate in physical activities by completing session activities.
  8. Demonstrate ability to listen and attend to familiar people. (SLlr/M4).
  9. Demonstrate ability to communicate an effective “like” and “dislike” in response to a range of sensory activities.
  10. Demonstrate ability to communicate an effective “more” in response to a range of sensory activities.
  11. Experiential awareness and/or physical participation in activities.
  12. Individual student targets.

Practical Tips

  1. Ensure you are familiar with the story and it helps if you learn it off by heart
  2. Chant the story to the same tune as “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”.
  3. Ensure staff facilitating the story are familiar with the story, the learning objectives and students’ individual targets.
  4. Check the YouTube links work before the lesson begins.
  5. Have all sensory story items arranged into boxes for each student/group of students.
  6. Allow for relaxation time and the end of the session for students to wind down and calm.
  7. The music pieces don’t have to be played for their entire duration - alternatively they can also be repeated if students are enjoying a particular activity.
  8. Relax, enjoy and have fun!
