Walk in Their Skin — Historical Writing Bundle
History provides the evidence. Empathy guides the questions.
Two men. Two speeches. Sixty-one days apart.
On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig stood before thousands of baseball fans at Yankee Stadium, saying farewell to the game he loved.
On September 3, 1939, King George VI spoke over the radio to a nation entering World War II.
Gehrig, known as the Iron Horse, faced a progressive illness that was ending his remarkable baseball career. King George VI had lived with a stammer since childhood and had unexpectedly inherited the throne following his brother’s abdication.
Neither man could simply change the circumstances confronting him.
Yet both spoke with remarkable dignity, humility, and consideration for others.
What can students discover when they look beyond the speeches and consider the men behind the microphones?
The Quiet Professionals
This bundle connects two historical figures whose lives and responsibilities were very different, yet whose speeches share a deeply human quality.
