This lesson looks at an example unseen poem. It is based on the song ‘Iron Sky’ by Paolo Nutini. I don’t tell the students that in actual fact it is a song until they have annotated. After they have annotated, we then listen to the poem to see if they can consider any other inferences. (You can play this via YouTube).

It reviews marking criteria, sentence stems as well as the beginning of a modelled answer.

Learning Objectives:

You will learn methods for analysing key themes, feelings and techniques within an unseen poem.

You should be able to offer imaginative and convincing interpretations of an unseen poem.

You could even consider metaphorical meanings and alternative interpretations.
