Upper Key Stage 2 Persuasive Writing Unit (3 weeks)
The Freak - Literacy Shed short film.
This comprehensive Freak writing unit includes a full PowerPoint for every lesson, each beginning with boxed-up success criteria to explore and analyse key language features. Every lesson follows a clear I Do, We Do, You Do structure, leading into an independent writing task where pupils apply the focus skill.
Each lesson includes two high-quality WAGOLLs for modelling, comparison and guided annotation. A statutory Year 5/6 spelling dictation sentence is provided for every lesson, each one linked directly to the themes and emotions in The Freak.
Skills taught across the unit include:

  • emotive language and personal pronouns
  • modal verbs for persuasion
  • adverbials for cause and effect
  • dashes for emphasis and additional information
  • rhetorical questions and repetition

The final outcome is a persuasive letter, supported by a structured planning template, two exemplar WAGOLLs and clear word banks to support vocabulary choice and sentence construction.
