This KS2 science lesson helps pupils aged 7–11 explore how the properties of different rocks make them suitable for specific uses. Through observation, discussion, and mini-book creation, pupils link real-world applications to scientific vocabulary and enquiry skills. The lesson supports National Curriculum objectives for rocks and soils.

What’s Included:
✔ Lesson plan
✔ PowerPoint presentation
✔ Rock fact sheets
✔ Mini-book template
✔ Vocabulary support cards
✔ Exemplar booklet page

Lesson Overview:
★ Starter: Pupils examine images of everyday objects made from rocks (e.g. marble statue, slate roof, granite countertop) and discuss why each material was chosen.
★ Main: Teacher-led input explains how properties like hardness, permeability, and durability influence use. Pupils investigate samples such as slate, granite, chalk, marble, and sandstone, then create a mini-book showing examples and explanations.
★ Plenary: Pupils design parts of a house and choose suitable rocks, writing reasoning chains to justify their choices.

Why It’s Useful:
✔ Differentiated for support, core, and challenge groups
✔ Follows National Curriculum objectives for rocks and soils
✔ Fully resourced for a 30–60 minute science lesson
✔ Printable and editable materials

Suggested Use Cases: Ideal for KS2 science units on materials, practical investigation lessons, or cross-curricular links with geography and history. Suitable for whole-class teaching, small group work, or homework tasks.
