One complete lesson from the Little Historians Vikings unit.
Big Question: Raiders, traders or settlers, how should we remember the Vikings?
The only near-complete Viking helmet ever found, set beside the horned helmet a costume designer invented for an opera. Pupils track where a myth came from, then reach their own judgement on the whole unit.
Pupils work two sources. The class investigates a real Viking helmet beside the horned one invented in 1876 together on the slides, in three steps: what can you see, what does it tell us, what can it not tell us. Pupils then take the same three steps on their own in the journal, on the Bayeux Tapestry.
The lesson follows the Little Historians six-stage framework: Time Travellers,
Big Question, Evidence Detectives, Discover, Prove It! and History Check.
Learning intention: To weigh the evidence from the whole unit and reach a judgement on the Vikings.
