From Stone Age to Bronze Age Year 3

With the National Curriculum in mind, I have created a high-quality history lesson designed to introduce Year 3 pupils to the transition from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age in Britain. The lesson supports the National Curriculum by helping children develop a secure understanding of chronology, explore how life changed over time, and use historical evidence to understand developments in prehistoric Britain.

This engaging lesson introduces pupils to the key changes that took place as Britain moved from the Stone Age into the Bronze Age. Pupils will explore how people lived, worked and used different materials, and investigate how the introduction of bronze changed tools, weapons and everyday life.

Students will explore:

What the Stone Age was and when it took place in Britain.
What the Bronze Age was and when it began.
Where the Bronze Age fits within the chronology of British history.
How people lived during the Stone Age.
How farming changed the lives of people in Britain.
Why people began using bronze to make tools and weapons.
The materials and technologies used by Stone Age and Bronze Age people.
How homes, settlements and communities developed over time.
What archaeological evidence can tell us about prehistoric Britain.
How life in the Bronze Age was different from life during the Stone Age.
What stayed the same despite these changes.
How the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman periods fit together on a timeline.

Lesson Format

This lesson is provided in PowerPoint format and includes detailed, engaging slides. It can be taught as written or adapted to suit individual class needs.

The 7-slide lesson uses clear explanations, images, questions and historical evidence to help young learners understand the transition from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age.

Pupils are encouraged to think like historians by examining evidence, ordering events chronologically and identifying change and continuity between the two periods.
