Causes of the Indian Mutiny - 1857

A six-part series of lessons towards the enquiry question: “Why did the Indians mutiny in 1857?” [Concept: Causation]

What will you get?

Six lessons:

  1. Pre-British India (the Mughal Empire)
  2. Decline of the Mughal Empire
  3. Growth of British India (the EIC)
  4. Life in British India
  5. The Uprising of 1857
  6. Extended Writing - “Why did the Indians…”

Each lesson in this bundle builds a contextual understanding for the expansion of the British presence in India and the events which led to the major uprising of 1857. Students will be engaged with a source-rich, adaptive scheme-of-work, which culminates in a written assessment (see Lesson 6).

All lessons are fully resourced and scaffolded for a range of abilities.

Note: This mini-scheme of lessons could be used as a precusor to an enquiry about the British Raj and the causes of Indian Independence in the 19th C. In line with recent guidance, it is vital that historically marginalised voices reemerge within the school curriculum. This mini-scheme helps build a contextual understanding of the British Empire in India, and why it was so entrenched there.
