This resource pack provides a structured set of real-world application lessons designed to support the “Learners should be aware of…” statements within the WJEC GCSE Science (2026) specification.

These specification points often require pupils to understand how scientific knowledge is applied in society, technology and environmental decision-making. The resources provide clear, classroom-ready activities that help pupils link core science concepts to real-world contexts while developing data interpretation and scientific literacy skills.

Each lesson follows a consistent teaching structure, making it easy to use across topics or integrate into schemes of work. Activities include:

• engaging starter questions linking science to real-world scenarios
• short teacher input summarising the relevant scientific concept
• data interpretation tasks using simple tables or graphs
• a “Science in the News” literacy activity with case study reading and questions
• application sorting activities to reinforce correct scientific understanding and address misconceptions
• plenary questions to check understanding

The pack covers several application contexts from the specification, including:

• the human microbiome and health
• photosynthesis and increasing food production
• plant transport and urban green spaces
• lifestyle choices and lung health
• technology and cardiovascular monitoring
• food webs and ecosystem health
• biotic and abiotic factors in predicting environmental change

All activities are designed for GCSE level learners and focus on developing key skills such as:

• interpreting scientific data
• identifying patterns and trends
• linking science to real-world issues
• reading and analysing scientific texts
• explaining scientific applications clearly

These resources are ideal for:

• GCSE Biology or Double Award Science lessons
• covering “application of science” specification points
• starter or plenary activities
• consolidation or revision lessons
• developing scientific literacy and data analysis skills

The materials can be used as complete lessons or individual activities depending on teaching needs.

Suitable for WJEC GCSE Science (2026) but adaptable for other GCSE science courses covering similar content.
