Words Their Way Anagrams: Within Word Pattern Spellers

Are you using the Words Their Way spelling program in your classroom and looking for new ways to help your students complete their spelling sorts?

This pack is for students spelling at the Within Word Pattern Spellers stage of the Words Their Way spelling program (the yellow book, published in 2009). We have found that students enjoy the challenge of anagrams to practise their spelling words. While they attempt to correctly arrange the mixed-up letters to correctly spell their spelling words, they are also focusing on learning particular spelling patterns and how spelling rules are applied. In addition, we have included a word sort (which is encouraged by the Words Their Way program), to help students sort their spelling words by their spelling pattern.

We love the Words Their Way spelling program because of the focus on word sorts by spelling pattern and the deeper thinking and understanding it encourages of particular spelling patterns. We have found it to be very successful because students learn at spelling stages that are developmentally appropriate for them. If you are interested in finding out more about this program we recommend reading Words Their Way and the accompanying books for each spelling stage, which provide the spelling lists for implementing this program.

This pack should be used with the word sort spelling lists for the Within Word Pattern Spellers stage of the Words Their Way program (this is the yellow book, published in 2009). Our worksheets begin at Sort 6 through to Sort 50, as Sorts 1-5 are picture sorts and so it is not possible to create anagrams for these first five initial sorts.

Please note that we are working on creating anagram packs for the remaining spelling stages of the Words Their Way program, so you will be able to have this activity available for all spelling levels of the program. We hope to have this published soon.
