This lesson develops pupils’ confidence with the density formula, preparing them for the practical investigations that follow. Students learn how to recall and apply the density equation, rearrange it to calculate mass or volume, and convert units so their calculations remain consistent and scientifically accurate.

Through guided examples, scaffolded practice and comparison tasks, pupils use their calculated values to compare materials and explain differences using scientific reasoning. This lesson builds the mathematical fluency needed for the density investigations in Lessons 5 and 6.

What Students Will Learn
How to recall and use the density equation

How to rearrange formulas to calculate mass or volume

How to convert between standard scientific units

How to compare materials using calculated density values
