This resource contains a selection of resources designed to help pupils learn the year 1 common exception words as specified in Appendix 1 of the English National Curriculum. Words are organised into eight word lists, making them easier to teach in manageable sections. The resource includes the following:

  • Teaching PPT - Features the eight year 1 common exception words lists presented on different slides. Each slide contains a different activity to help pupils practise spelling the words.

  • Word List Posters / Flashcards - Each word list appears on its own page in a large font. These can be displayed while pupils are learning a list, or individual words can be cut out and used as flashcards.

  • Look Cover Write Check Sheets - Pupils can use these sheets independently to practise spelling the words using the look, cover, write, check (LCWC) method. The sheets also include sentences with missing words from the list, allowing pupils to complete the gaps and practise using the words in context. There are eight LCWC sheets which contain the spelling lists, plus one editable blank sheet which can be adapted and used to practise specific words.

  • Word Mat - This word mat includes all the Year 1 common exception words in alphabetical order. Pupils could use it as a reference during writing activities. It could also be sent home to provide parents with an overview of the full word list.

  • Checklist - This contains the common exception words listed alongside tick boxes. Teachers can use this sheet to record whether individual pupils can read and spell the words. The editable blank LCWC sheet could then be used to practise specific words they do not yet know.
