Some simple sentences I came up with to help year 1 children remember: how/when to use capital letters; full stops; exclamation marks; question marks; capital “I”; capitals for places, days and people; and to use “and” to join ideas. Designed to be taught to the class as if casting a magic spell (use pencils like wands etc).

Objectives covered:

Joining words and joining clauses using ‘and’
Beginning to punctuate sentences using a capital letter and a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark
Using a capital letter for names of people, places, the days of the week, and the personal pronoun ‘I’
