Wondering what to do with the poor Year 11 English students for the Summer Term?

Look no further than this carefully crafted interactive 7 week course. A series of role play and written tasks take the students through the process of setting up and establishing a business or charity with all the highs and lows that can entail.

The teacher acts as “silent business” partner and investor and students are given the scope to choose what business they would like to set up. At various times the teacher can add problems or successes that the students have to respond to.

The students can work as individuals, in pairs or in groups and have to employ their literacy and numeracy skills in order to deal with a range of business tasks from letter and CV writing to business plan creation, to interview question to marketing adverts and even diplomatic emails to unhappy colleagues! They are also challenged to create excel spreadsheets and justify their loses and decide how to invest their profit.

This is a well constructed series of lessons that broadens the students’ vocabulary, builds their literacy skills and gives them vital life skills. They will see this as relevant and helpful to their future lives and this will stimulate their enthusiasm at this difficult time.

This would work extremely well as a homelearning set of lessons that allows the students to work independently with very limited need for teacher intervention.

The aims are clearly set out, the tasks are differentiated, well supported and varied whilst a great range of skills are required.

The next 7 weeks of Year 11 planning is done!
