This chapter starts with the one rule every fraction depends on: the parts must be exactly equal, or the name doesn’t apply. From there it covers reading and writing fractions (top number, bottom number, what each means), finding a fraction of a shape by colouring equal parts, and finding a fraction of an amount by sharing into equal groups, linking fractions directly back to division.

Shows visually why two quarters equal one half, and works through the common trap of assuming a bigger bottom number means a bigger piece.

Includes a worked explanation, common misconceptions addressed directly (children often call any two pieces “halves” regardless of size, or read one third as “one and three”), and 30 questions across three sections: warm up, getting stronger and challenge, moving from shape-based questions to worded reasoning problems that compare fractions of different amounts.
