Year 2 lesson 4

This 90-minute lesson develops learners’ ability to communicate astronomical observations accurately and appropriately for different audiences. Building on the previous lesson’s work with observation data, learners explore the difference between raw notes and a clear, audience-ready presentation. Through teacher modelling, comparison activities and practical tasks, they translate observation logs into structured tables, convert numerical data into simple visual forms, and rewrite technical language in plain English without changing the scientific meaning. Throughout the lesson, emphasise that translation is not “dumbing down”: dates, measurements, observing conditions and findings must remain truthful and complete. Check understanding through the error-spotting starter, audience-matching discussion, accuracy checklist, partner verification and plenary questions. Support learners with side-by-side examples, sentence starters, paired checking, large-print resources and a choice of written, visual or spoken formats; extend confident learners by asking them to create and translate their own data set. Prepare raw observation logs or sample data sheets, audience scenario cards and plain-language glossary templates in advance. The lesson leads into planning further observational work in Y2-05.
