This chapter starts with the eight British coins from 1p to £2, tackling directly the trap children fall into first: bigger coins aren’t always worth more (the 5p is smaller than the 2p, the £1 is smaller than the 50p). From there it covers making the same amount different ways, adding a handful of coins by starting with the largest, and finding change by counting on rather than subtracting.
Includes a worked explanation, common misconceptions addressed directly (children often count the number of coins rather than their value, or mix pounds and pence in one sum), and 30 questions across three sections: warm up, getting stronger and challenge, moving from straightforward coin recognition to worded reasoning problems involving change and comparison.
Answers included, with a star chart for pupils to track progress and a confidence check-in at the end.
