This three-lesson reading comprehension pack is designed for children in the Autumn term of Year 3. It uses an engaging non-fiction text about Stone Age hunter-gatherers, farming, tools, fire, art and Stonehenge to teach key reading skills alongside the KS2 History topic.
The lessons provide a clear progression through the Year 3 reading domains:
Lesson 1: word meaning, retrieval and summarising – domains 2a, 2b and 2c
Lesson 2: making inferences and supporting ideas with evidence – domain 2d
Lesson 3: applying all four reading domains – 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d
Each lesson includes:
An editable teaching PowerPoint
Clear I do, We do and You do activities
Child-friendly explanations and modelling
Hinge questions and assessment opportunities
Independent comprehension activities
Differentiated question sheets at SEND, Expected and Greater Depth levels
Teacher answer sheets showing the reading domain assessed
Age-appropriate vocabulary and questions for children beginning Year 3
Realistic Stone Age images to support engagement and understanding
The SEND sheets include tick-box choices, word banks and sentence support. Expected-level sheets provide balanced practice across the required domains, while Greater Depth questions encourage children to explain their thinking without using unnecessarily difficult language.
This pack is ideal for whole-class reading, guided reading, English lessons or cross-curricular work linked to a Stone Age History topic. It can also be used for assessment, intervention or lesson observations.
All resources, excluding the texts, are editable, allowing teachers to adapt the wording, questions or level of support for their own class.
