This superb 6 week teaching unit, takes the learners from the inception, features and structure of instructions to researching, planning and designing their own computer games. This unit has a cross-curricular focus, whereby the learners focus on English (reading and writing), Maths (data and statistics) and ICT (programming and algorithms).

Whilst the children learn how to make their own computer games in ICT, the English follows alongside as each section of the instructions is written in tandem with the design process.

Focus and objectives for instructions focus on: goal/aim, steps, resources and conclusion. Use the below pre-writing and key questions throughout the unit to allow your class to reflect on their writing and process as they move through the unit, building meta-cognition and deeper learning.

• What is to be done or made? What is the aim or goal? What might your title be?
• What is needed to complete this? Materials, ingredients, tools and so on.
• In what order should things be done? What are the steps in the process? What is the best way to organize and present them?
• What will you add to your written text to help the audience understand better? (diagrams, illustrations, pictures etc.)
Key questions
• What will I need to complete this task?
• What do I have to do to complete this task?
• How will I know if I completed the task correctly?
