This one-week reading unit is designed to develop pupils’ comprehension skills through a range of engaging texts and activities, based on the book Everest by Alexandra Stewart and Joe Todd-Stanton. Throughout the week, children will explore and discuss new vocabulary, using context clues and word knowledge to deepen their understanding. They will develop inference skills by finding and explaining evidence from the text, while also making thoughtful predictions based on what they have read.

Pupils will use mind maps to organise ideas, make connections and summarise key information. They will expand on their responses through discussion and written activities, providing reasons and evidence to support their thinking. The unit also includes opportunities to retrieve information, identify important themes and characters, and reflect on the author’s choices and intentions.

Through their study of Everest, pupils will explore themes such as perseverance, courage, exploration and achievement, while gaining an understanding of the challenges faced by climbers and the significance of Mount Everest. The text provides rich opportunities for discussion, vocabulary development and deeper comprehension.

By the end of the week, pupils will have strengthened their ability to understand, interpret and respond to a variety of texts while developing confidence in discussing and explaining their ideas. They will also have gained a deeper appreciation of the themes, characters and information presented in Everest.
