Teaching modal verbs to year 5 and 6 couldn’t be easier with this great activity. Based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth, this activity uses the characters and story of the bard’s famous Scottish play to teach modal verbs. Children are tasked with filling in the gaps in each sentence with the most appropriate modal verb. They will learn that there can often be many choices - knowing the story will help them choose the most appropriate. A great SPaG activity to use during Shakespeare Week or to link to your class theme or topic.

Children will learn:

  • What a modal verb is.
  • How to identify them.
  • The different uses of modal verbs.
  • Applying their understanding of modal verbs to sentences.
  • Embedding their understanding and knowledge of the play.
