The Year 5 Informative Texts unit of work integrating Talk for Write, is designed to be fun, engaging, and comprehensive. Yet it also caters to students of various learning abilities through differentiated materials. This unit focuses on teaching students how to structure their writing effectively by incorporating both language and structural features specific to information reports.

Through this unit, students not only develop their writing skills but also enhance their critical thinking, comprehension, and technological literacy, preparing them for academic success and effective communication in the modern world.

Aligned with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA), this unit addresses several key curriculum outcomes:

Understand how texts vary in purpose, structure, and topic, as well as the degree of formality (ACELA1504).

Investigate how the organization of texts into chapters, headings, subheadings, etc., can be used to predict content and assist navigation (ACELA1797).

Understand and experiment with sound devices, imagery, and literary techniques in various texts (ACELT1611).

Create literary texts experimenting with structures, ideas, and stylistic features of selected authors (ACELT1798).

Identify and explain characteristic text structures and language features in imaginative, informative, and persuasive texts (ACELY1701).

Use comprehension strategies to analyze information from various sources (ACELY1703).

Plan, draft, and publish informative texts, choosing appropriate structures, language features, images, and sounds (ACELY1704).

Re-read and edit own and others’ work using agreed criteria for text structures and language features (ACELY1705).

Utilize a range of software, including word processing programs, to construct, edit, and publish written text, integrating visual, print, and audio elements fluently (ACELY1707).
