40 word-level starter activities: 30 worksheets with lesson plans and ten additional teacher-led plans, plus a recording sheet, in an 82-page PDF for Year 9 English.
Activities cover spelling, spelling strategies and vocabulary. Students explore homonyms and homophones, common errors, suffixes, silent letters, mnemonics, word families, plurals, dictionary and thesaurus use, word classes, expanded noun phrases, active and passive verbs, connotation and connectives.
Plans identify outcomes, preparation, timing, grouping, differentiation and extension work where relevant. Ten starters can be delivered without a pupil worksheet. The recording sheet supports tracking of work in the original Framework format.
Designed for roughly 10–15-minute lesson openings, with some pages offering enough material for several sessions. Use with Year 9 students of varied abilities; selected tasks need dictionaries, thesauruses, paper or individual whiteboards.
This is the original 2002 publication, organised around the historical National Literacy Strategy Framework. Objective references are retained without a claim of current curriculum alignment.
