This lesson investigates why the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic sank in April 1912. It looks at a number of mistakes that were made and asks students to discuss and evaluate which was the most important cause of the sinking. An easy to follow lesson on Titanic. Students review pieces of evidence and categorise and organise this these into a diamond 9 (or score each piece of evidence) to determine who they think was to blame for the Titanic disaster. They follow this up with a report writing activity to explain their theory and also to offer suggestions on how future disasters might be avoided. 55 Titanic passenger (and some crew) information cards. Each card shares a photo of the passenger (or crew member) and gives information on nationality, age, class, ticket number and much much more! A brilliant resource when looking at who was on board the Titanic. A supporting document also states whether the person survived or not.

A fantastic statistics project based on passengers of the Titanic, that works with small groups, individual students & large classes. The data has been differentiated to suit all levels of ability/attainment. Zip file includes an excel spreadsheet containing the real data for over 2000 passengers of the Titanic (including links to the lifeboats giving some real interesting information!), a booklet containing frequency tables and graphs for groups that need more support and teachers notes to support with delivering the activity.

Based on an exciting extract about the sinking of the Titanic, this resource includes: question paper 25 slide powerpoint The powerpoint clearly and throughly covers each question. There are sample answers or indicative content for each question with ‘do now’ tasks to help students improve their skills. Really useful for KS4 students learning or revising the skills for the exam.

Created for a lesson during my PGCE year that aims to help students empathise with characters on board the Titanic in order to reveal societal attitudes to class at this time. Students are greeted for the lesson with 'tickets' that indicate the 'class/table' they sit on. Once in the room/on board the ship they read the on board information booklet to learn about the facilities on offer to them depending on the class they are sat in. After this they write a post card 'home' which is used by other groups so that all students learn what it was like in each class on board the ship. At the end students are asked to draw upon all of their knowledge to answer the question 'What does the interior tell us about the class divide of the time?' I transformed the tables in my room so that they reflected the 'class', for example, third class had cramped tables and resources (such as glue sticks) that they needed to share whereas first class had a large table with a view out of the room with enough resources for one each. Small differences that really helped my class engage and empathise. All resources are included right down to tickets and place cards for the desks as well as postcard templates, recording worksheet and brochures for each of the 'classes'. I have included some practical advice/information on how I executed the lesson. I used this lesson with several Year 9 classes (3 year KS3) but it really could adapt to any year group depending on their literacy levels/behaviour when put into a group setting.

This is a quiz about the Titanic, the infamous ship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1912. This could serve as a general quiz for fun during form period or as an starter/plenary to a history lesson about the Titanic. Answers are included. Ideal for older Key Stage 3 students or GCSE/A level History students. Students should gain some understanding of some key facts about the Titanic that they can use as a base for further study or to consolidate their knowledge of this.

Lesson and resources and tasks on the Titanic. Kids love the sources.

A full lesson on the Titanic, focusing on the individuals, objects and legacy of the event. Through the enquiry of ‘How should the Titanic be remembered’? The aim of the lesson is for students to understand what happened the night the Titanic sunk, who was on board and what changes were made after the disaster. Students do this through an engaging video, interesting worksheets with questions and creating their own museum display / information page on the disaster. There is opportunity to explore the National Archives website in the lesson and to discuss how tragic events are remembered and what should be placed in museums to commemorate and educate people about historical events. The plenary asks students to consider the emotional impact of the Titanic and explain their feelings towards what they have learnt in the lesson. This lesson is a KS3 lesson with clear objectives, a key enquiry question. All information sheets and resources are included on the slides. It downloads in a powerpoint format so can be adapted easily. “Linn awoke, startled by a sudden jolt. As he slipped on his shoes he could sense that something wasn’t quite right…” Write your own Titanic adventure stories where you, the reader and writer, get to choose your own path - just like Ian Livingstone the famous adventure book writer. Differentiated 3 ways; on the computer, write 5,7 or 10 paragraphs describing a characters adventures through the sinking Titanic. These include cabins, steerage, upper deck, lower deck, first class lounge, grand staircase, bridge deck, boat deck, promenade deck and finally the lifeboats. Once your paragraphs are written, play your PowerPoint as a slideshow from the beginning. Hyperlink buttons on each page will now present the reader with different options to take in order to complete their adventure. E.g. From your cabin, head towards steerage, the upper deck or the first class lounge. Writing 1 or 2 paragraphs for each setting created dozens of teaching opportunities. Why not have each room be written for different effects? E.g. Suspense, setting description, senses, emotions…

Activities I used for a study on The Titanic with Year 6. 1 week was not enough! The kids loved it and we ended up creating a 3D ship which included facts, figures, illustrations and diagrams which the children created themselves - can’t wait to do it again next year!
