Lesson begins by recapping on the problems caused for Germany by the Kaiser’s actions. There is then a focus on the Kaiser’s Navy Laws before an introduction to a ‘Describe 2’ exam question including an example answer. Class have to complete a linking exercise which assesses their understanding so far before looking at the initial impact of the War on the Kaiser’s popularity. Finishes with a video (youtube link on ppt) which is a quick narrative of WW1. This links to the following lesson on war weariness. Year 9 introduction lesson/lessons to the subject of Hitler. Lesson makes use of video resources (links embedded to Youtube) to explore the early life of Hitler. This is then supported by a timeline task and comprehension work enabling pupils to get an idea about the background of Hitler, where his ideas came from, and how he ended up in charge of the Nazi Party. The lessons finish with a consolidation exercise which introduces the terminology of one of the new GCSE questions - the ‘write an account’ question. Lesson is presented in a clear and self-explanatory way and makes use of the Technology, War and Identities, (1st edition) textbook. This is easily adaptable depending on the resources at your school. Links to Youtube video are included in the ppt. Lesson(s) begin by looking at the impact of Chadwick’s work on public health in Britain and look at the Cholera epidemics of the 1800s. This buids in to examine the impact of the work of John Snow (video and individual work) and students learn why this still didn’t result in widespread improvement in public health. Lesson then looks at the impact of the ‘Great Stink’ and (via video and textbook) the work of Joseph Bazalgette during the ‘Great Clean up’. Created for the new AQA GCSE: Lessons pick up after the Battle of Hastings recapping on William’s actions after the Battle. Pupils then look at the motte and bailey castle, strengths and weaknesses and the reasons for the Normans building them. There is some focus on the ‘explain the importance question’, based around castles and then some work looking at Pickering Castle (this wasn’t our focus this year so I just used it as a good example for the pupils). Revision lesson created this year for my Year 13 class. Lesson charts the rise of the Nazis in political terms, from the coalition of Muller, through Bruning, von Papen and Schleicher. This revision lesson has a lot of info which can be used in different ways. I delivered it in a lecture style with pauses for exam question focus. I have structured it around exam questions, there are a few examples within the lesson.

Lesson looks at the financial problems caused by defeat in the War and the efforts of the Weimar Republic to solve them. There are information slides and questions throughout the lesson to get the pupils to think of the problems certain potential strategies could, and did cause, in Germany. There are tasks and a short video (embedded in ppt) which look at inflation, a concept I often spend a lot of the lesson trying to explain! Lesson finishes with pupils looking at the economic impact of the Versailles reparations. Lesson follows up on recent work on the Treaty of Versailles with a set of recap questions on the German reaction to the Treaty and for-and-against points on whether the German reaction was justified. Class are then asked to complete a newspaper task, examining the reaction to the ToV from different countries’ perspectives. At the end of the lesson there is some exam work around a 25-mark question and some pointers I provide for pupils when asking them to answer this particular question. Revision lesson looking at the Backstairs Intrigue which helped get Hitler into power. My year 13s (and current 12s) have found this topic difficult so I produced this lesson to go over the key players and to try and clarify. Lesson can be taught as a ‘lecture’ going over the major stages (Muller - Hitler) or can be used as notes for something more interactive. At this point, my class just want me to do the work so this lesson worked fine for that!! Covers: Muller Bruning Von Papen Schleicher Explains the behind the scenes ‘intrigue’ throughout. Notes are printable straight from the ppt and I’ve tried to present and write them in a student friendly style!

Lesson looks at the ‘miracle’ of Dunkirk using video clips, comprehension and source analysis. Begins with a chronology starter intended to get class settled and show them the incredible speed with which the Germans were able to conquer mainland Europe. This is followed by a video and PPT explanation of the key points of Dunkirk, reinforced with a clip from the recent film. Comprehension task makes use of Modern World History for AQA: Core Students Book New Edition (AQA Modern World History 2009) - if not available this can be replaced by other source/video material. (task can also be replaced with another similar). Next part of lesson (can be made into 2 lessons if needed) looks at different interpretations of the evacuation firstly picture sources and then videos- one from a contemporary newsreel and another from the film Atonement. Class then need to analyse why the viewpoints are different. Lesson/s finish with newspaper headlines from different viewpoints and ideas for possible homeworks.

2-3 lessons looking at the Peasants’ Revolt. Lesson begins by introducing the causes for the Revolt, looking at why the peasants were angry. Pupils then watch a video - (link in PPT) to tell the story of the revolt. This recaps the causes and moves on to the events and the conclusion. The lessons then include a mix of textbook work and source analysis to look at the events of the Revolt, the end of Wat Tyler and differing views on the events. This includes some work around bias and interpretation. Lesson finishes with a poster task which consolidates learning. Lesson makes use of Oxford Invasion Plague and Murder textbook. Worksheet is printable from the end of the ppt, as are the sources.

Lesson covering the peace treaties which were agreed outside of the League of Nations, including Locarno and Kellogg-Briand. Lesson begins by linking to previous knowledge of Dunkirk before moving on to look at the threat to Britain. Pupils learn via video and subsequent teacher consolidation/class discussion the basics of Operation Sealion and the attempts made by Britain to defend itself. Class then watch a second clip which looks at the events of the Battle of Britain itself. They need to focus on the events but also the reasons why Britain was able to win/Germany lost. This is then consolidated with a written task on the PPt and then further via a cardsort/shading exercise (which I often set for homework) PPt and cardsort/shading task are included and the links to the videos are embedded. (First clip only needs to be watched for around 10 minutes). I have updated the link to the second clip with a new version as the old video was removed from Youtube. 2 lessons looking at why the USA got involved in the war and how they ended it by dropping the Atomic bombs on Japan. Lessons begin by looking at the attack on Pearl Harbour, introduced with a video clip to get pupils involved before looking in more depth at the reasons for, and the consequences of, this attack. Pupils will then begin to understand why Japan was proving a difficult enemy for the USA to defeat (again supported by a clip) and look at different reasons for the dropping of the atomic bombs. I usually use these two lessons as an assessment as there is an extended writing task at the end of the PPT which gets the pupils to argue both sides of an debate and use sources to support their views, This can also be done as a class debate, depending on the class! Lesson recaps the peace-keeping powers of the League of Nations before looking more at the strengths and weaknesses of the League. This is supported by an exam-style source question. Pupils then look at the work of the LON special commissions, both successes and failures. This is consolidated by their completion of a quiz (attached). Lessons serves to introduce pupils to the GCSE course (I teach Paper 2 in the first year) and gets them thinking about medicine and medical progress through simple interpretation exercises. There is a brief explanation of the factors involved in progress (which will be looked at throughout the course) before pupils are introduced to the conflict between supernatural and natural ones. They then look at the 4 Humours and the work of Hippocrates, finishing by some work on the continuation of the supernatural and the Temple of Asklepios. Lesson picks up from looking at Hippocrates and studies the work and impact of Galen via textbook exercises and a video clip (link in ppt). Class are then introduced to the medical ‘treatments’ available in the Middle Ages, including barber surgeons and ‘doctors’ before completing a research task (can be used for computer lesson/task or homework) on the methods used by doctors in Medieval times. Lesson which works for all abilities of year 9 pupils - looks at the Schlieffen Plan, giving the students an understanding of WHY the plan was needed, WHAT the plan was and WHY it failed. Uses a mixture of paired work, video clips and textbook work to achieve the following objectives: To understand why Britain became involved in WW1 To be able to describe the Schlieffen Plan and how and why the plan failed. Lesson finishes with an introduction to trench warfare which can then be focussed on in the following lesson.
