Source Skills Audit for History Students
Students are asked to decide which statements are true or false and give reasons for their choice. Each statement relates to the analysis of historical sources by historians. This activity is perfect as an introduction to higher level source analysis at KS4 and KS5. Once students have completed in pairs (60 mins), you can then peer assess and discuss as a whole class.
D-Day Fact Finding Activity
This fact finding activity on D-Day is suitable for any KS3 group.
The pack contains the following fact files:
- What was D-Day?
- What happened on D-Day?
- Where did D-Day take place and why?
- How fierce was the fighting on D-Day?
- How is D-Day commemorated?
There are also some maps and factfiles on the key generals involved in the battle including Patton, Montgomery, Eisenhower and Rommel.
With the factfiles are a comprehensive set of questions. Cut these out and use them as part of a "Quick on the Draw" activity.
The powerpoint presentation can be used to structure the lesson. The lesson plan provided is an alternative to the activity here. It includes several other lesson ideas.

8 event boxes that can be cut out by students and put into the correct order. Perfect for a simple lesson starter or recap.
USA Civil Rights fact files and Grid
Fact files covering Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and the Little Rock 9. These are suitable for KS3 students and also contain differentiated versions.
The second resource is a student enquiry grid. You could place the three factfiles around the room and ask students to fill in the grid.

Nazi Germany Flashcards; Hitler's Rise to Power
A collection of 16 flashcards covering the period between 1919 and 1934 in Germany. The flashcards include information on the Weimar Republic, the Munich Putsch, the Hyperinflation crisis, the SA, Goebbels, the Reichstag Fire, the Enabling Law and the Night of the Long Knives.
Each card asks why each person or event was important. Students can use the flash cards for revision, quizzing each other or simply by placing them face down on the table and turning each one over in turn, trying to explain the factor.

Flying Aces of WW1 - fact finding activity
The aim of this activity is for students to find out about some of the most successful and daring pilots of the First World War.
This resource contains 9 individual factfiles containing information about 9 different World War One flying aces from different countries including the Red Baron Von Richthofen along with British, French and American counterparts. Each factfile is individually designed with a couple of "shorter" ones for the purpose of differentiation.
Students could go around the room individually or in pairs and try to fill in the grid. Alternatively, you could perform a "marketplace" activity.
How did Britain keep India in the British Empire between 1918 and 1947?
An activity asking students to identify the tactics used the British to keep India in the British Empire. Includes some helpful hints for students to trigger research and a cartoon for analysis.
How independent were British colonies between 1947 and 1967?
Students could complete this at the start or the end of a unit looking at the stages of independence for various British colonies. It could be sent as a homework at the start of a unit asking to students to find out the relevant information themselves.
The Causes of the Boer War
An activity asking students to find out about and prioritise the causes of the Boer War.
The resource contains a table and some useful hints.
British Empire colour coded timeline 1857-1967
A timeline showing all the key events that happened around the British Empire between these dates.
The task asks students to shade/border each event in a different colour to show whether it is a political, social, international or event involving an individual or group.
The second timeline shows the answers. This could be used as a task to start an entire unit of work or, perhaps more appropriately, as a revision exercise.
